Historic Lexington Virginia was founded in 1779 and it is one of the best preserved and friendly , towns in the Shenandoah Valley. The town of 7,000 has a unique ‘’General’’ connection. Civil War buffs find a stop in the charming small town a must. Thomas ‘’Stonewall’’ Jackson, famous Civil War Confederate General, taught at Virginia Military Institute before entering the war. He is buried in town as is General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Southern forces. General Lee came to Lexington after the War in 1865 and was President of Washington College, now Washington and Lee University , until his death in 1870. Lee Chapel & Museum on the campus pays honor to General Lee. General George Washington helped endow the original beginnings of Washington & Lee(Liberty Hall Academy) with $65,000 worth of canal stock. General George Marshall the great World War II U.S. general, graduated from Virginia Military Institute and the Marshall Library on the Post is a must see. VMI cadet parades are a guest favorite favorite when the school is in session.
The Lexington Visitor Center downtown www.lexingtonvirginia.com is the best place to start your visit here. Horse carriage rides, free downtown tours on Fridays, ghost tours in season begin here. The Blue Ridge Parkway is 11 miles east of town, Natural Bridge and cavern is 15 minutes down Rt 11 south. The VMI museum in town houses numerous historic exhibits including ‘’Stonewall’s stuffed war horse Little Sorrel. Great restaurants in or close to town are always popular as well as the many arts, craft, dress and antique shops downtown. Two vineyards are closeby as well as Wades Mill where you can see the inner workings of a working mill. Families love to tour Virginia Safari Park, a drive thru zoo with over 1000 animals Mar-Nov. Lime Kiln Outdoor Theatre has plays and concerts during the summer months.
The area has some of the Valley’s most enjoyable nature and opportunities including great scenic drives, exceptional fall foliage, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, trout fishing, llama trekking, geocaching , canoeing, kayaking, golf and much more are all very closeby.
