Barclay Cottage Bed and Breakfast

Built in 1895 and welcoming guests since 1917, Barclay Cottage is one of the oldest continuously operating lodging facilities in Virginia. The warmth of this historic inn with the coziness of home, provides a refreshing alternative to high-rise hotel/motel accommodations. Antiques, hand-made quilts, high-quality bedding, thirsty towels and luxurious robes await guests in each room.

Enjoy a sumptuous gourmet breakfast including fruits, baked goods and hot entree served in the Great Room each morning. Then head for the beach with the provided beach chairs, umbrellas, towels and boogie boards.

Later, kick back in a rocker on one of the wraparound verandas perhaps while sipping a glass of wine from the Barclay Cottage cellar. In the summer, the second floor porch is a great place to enjoy the twice a week fireworks over the water.

In cooler weather, after a hearty breakfast, enjoy a day of whale-watching with scientists from the Virginia Marine Science Museum, or explore the many museums and shops in the area. Bike riding (we have them for your use), hiking, and beach combing are also possibilities as is climbing the first lighthouse commissioned by the U.S. Government.

Of course, the fish are biting at every time of year, and the Virginia Beach Fishing Center runs party boats and charters all year. Or catch your limit from the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier only 3 blocks away.

We will be happy to wrap and freeze your catch to take home.

Return to the cottage for hot chocolate, tea or mulled cider while deciding which of the 20 restaurants within walking distance to patronize (anything from a local pizza joint to 4 diamond elegance) and whether to enjoy a play, concert, the ballet or opera. Alternatively, you can always order in and pop a DVD in the player or see what's on cable on the large TV in the Great Room.

No matter the weather or the time of year, your Barclay Cottage"place at the beach" has something to offer everyone.

14 day notice required for refund of deposit.  If notice received fewer than 14 days before arrival, deposit will be refunded only if room is booked by another.  In every instance a $25.00 cancellation fee will be charged.
