Settled in 1757, Lynchburg was named for its founder, John Lynch, who, at the age of 17, started a ferry service across the James River. In 1812, the ferry service was replaced by Lynchburg’s first bridge. Lynchburg was the only city that did not fall to the Union during the American Civil War. It served as a Confederate supply base and, for four days in 1865, it was the capitol of Virginia. First Thomas Jefferson, who frequented Lynchburg, maintained vacation home, Poplar Forest, in the area. This octagonal structure is open to the public.
