The small town of Orange, Virginia, with just a total area of 3.2 square miles is north of Charlottesville.
In Orange, you will find numerous examples of historic architecture. Before the Civil War, it was the center of commerce and justice for Orange County, Virginia. A number of antebellum buildings can be found there today. The Orange Commercial Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
During the Civil War, Orange was strategically important, with the Rapidan River to its north serving as the northern border of the Confederacy from March 1862 until May 1864. The town of Orange was General Robert E. Lee’s headquarters during that time and he worshipped at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, still standing today on Caroline Street. The church also served as a hospital for wounded Confederate solders after the Battle of Chancellorsville and the Battle of the Wilderness.
In the early 1900s the town was well-known for its silk mill, which produced many of the parachutes used by American troops during World War 2. The silk mill closed in the 1970s, and the building today houses local businesses, including a restaurant.
