Visit the Beautiful Shenandoah Valley

The name Shenandoah is said to have come from a Native American expression for "Beautiful Daughter of the Stars." The Valley was first settled by German and then Scotch Irish immigrants. The Shenandoah Valley was known as the bread basket of the Confederacy during the Civil War and was seen as a back door for Confederate raids to the north. You can visit many of the historical battlefields and learn all about this part of our history.

Today the peaceful Shenandoah Valley is a seasonal delight. This area of Virginia is really a year-round wonderland, with magnificent summer and winter experiences. Be sure to check out the many events and festivals held in communities up and down the entire Valley.

The Shenandoah Valley is also home to a variety of impressive natural phenomenon like magnificent caverns and towering mountain ranges. Our Valley also has its fair share of culture. There are many museums and historical sites, from the antebellum era to the frontiersman, from the Civil War to Woodrow Wilson's Presidential Library and Museum.

There is also wealth of talented artists in the Shenandoah Valley region. Their work is displayed in local and community galleries and open studios. The Valley's vineyards have grown and flourished. They invite our many visitors to taste the bounty of their harvests.
