Virginia has a long, rich tradition of making wine. Early English settlers in Jamestown had great hopes for cultivating wine; indeed, a law required every man to plant at least ten vines. In spite of repeated, earnest efforts, early attempts to cultivate wine in Virginia were unsuccessful.

The problem lay with the grapes. Early Virginians were intent on growing European vines; once they switched to Native American grapes in the early 1820s, they had success. Today, some 400 years later, their dreams of producing world-class wines have been realized.

Today there are more than 150 wineries across Virginia, from the Atlantic Coast to the mountains of Appalachia. The Virginia wines they are producing have wowed international wine critics - the Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and native Norton wines are particularly impressive. Growing conditions and weather in Virginia create vintages unlike California and European wines. They go exceptionally well with food.
