Ararat is very near the Virginia’s border with North Carolina and about five miles from Mt. Airy, North Carolina. It takes its name from the Ararat River, which flows through the area. The Saura Indians named it for Surry Mountain in North Carolina. Because they thought it resembled a bullfrog, they named it for how they thought a bullfrog sounded: "ratratrat"! Early settlers thought that sounded like Ararat, which was the landing point of Noah’s ark, according to the bible.
