The town of Blacksburg has the largest population in Virginia. Other locations may have more people, but they are incorporated as cities.

In 1671, European explorers, led by Abraham Wood, came upon what is today known as Blacksburg, Virginia.

Blacksburg is named for Samuel Black, who, in 1772 purchased for his sons, John and William, 600 acres of land in a section formerly known as Draper’s Meadow. When Samuel Black died in 1792, the land was evenly divided between his sons. The road, now known as Draper Road, is the dividing line between their two properties. John Black’s section covered what today is the main part of today’s central campus and William Black’s property became most of today’s central downtown.

Today, Blacksburg is dominated by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, commonly referred to as Virginia Tech.
