Four Square Plantation
Four Square Plantation, built in 1807, is both a National and a Virginia Historic Landmark. It is located in a peaceful rural setting, 3 1/2 miles SW of Smithfield. The yard consists of 4 acres shaded by large trees. Four original outbuildings and a pretty 3/4 acre pond are situated behind the house. A large front porch, equipped with rockers, provides a pleasant setting for reading, conservation, and enjoying a cool drink. Friendly cats, two poodles, and a variety of wildlife near the pond, or in the surrounding crop fields, under cultivation since 1693, contribute to the pastoral atmosphere.
Four Square's guest rooms are the original plantation home's bedrooms as well. All are large, have working fireplaces, private baths and a minimum of four windows. Each is equipped with an easy chair and a good supply of books and magazines. All have televisions with satellite hookups. A VCR can be provided on request. The furnishings are a mix of antique and antique reproductions. Two bedrooms have Queen sized main beds, one a King size. Two of the bedrooms have additional twin beds. All beds are equipped with hotel quality, extra firm mattresses. In spite of the historic nature of the house, a modern central air conditioning system keeps all bedrooms and baths cool on even the hottest summer day.
A full breakfast is served at a time selected by you (within reason) in the home's dining room, which is furnished with 17th and 18th Century antiques owned by the innkeeper's grandmother. A typiclal breakfast consists of juice, seasonal fresh fruit, a hot entree with sidemeats, hot bread or biscuits, and your choice of beverage. Menus are varied daily to avoid repetition.
With its peaceful atmosphere, a large yard, a stocked pond, and plenty to read, Four Square is an ideal place to relax, but if one wishes to venture forth, there are inumerable things to do. Much of our nation's colonial, Revolutionary, and Civil War history was centered in this area. Jamestown, Williamsburg, Yorktown, the James River Plantations, and many Civil War Battlefields are only a short drive away. Smithfield itself is a charming little town, with a sizeable historic district, and perhaps America's oldest colonial English church.More contemporary attractions include the fishing piers, beaches, regional parks, and Busch Gardens. Four Square is ideally situated to visit all these attractions, being approximately halfway between Williamsburg and Virginia Beach.
