The Mayhurst Plantation Experience
Come enjoy the ambiance, pampering and exceptional service at this romantic 9200 sq. ft. antebellum mansion on 37 pristine acres? Our guests sip tea or wine on our lovely veranda, sway in the double hammock or simply enjoy the many gardens surrounding the Patio, the Manor House and the School House. Others relax under the spreading ash tree by the pond, fishing or bird watching and catching glimpses of fox or deer on this picturesque old estate. Many walk the mowed paths where 18,000 Confederate troops camped for the winter of 1863-1864. Some borrow our metal detector to see what artifacts they can find.
Included in your visit to Mayhurst is the pampering and service you expect from only the finest establishments. From full Plantation style breakfasts each morning, to wine, snacks and cheese each evening, to your Innkeepers responsiveness to your every need, you will always remember your Mayhurst experience. For you comfort and pleasure Mayhurst has three parlors, a comfortable and well stocked library, a spacious dining room, a unique sitting room in the cupola and a large sunny verandah all of which invite to relax and forget the stress of today's hectic lifestyle. All eight of our luxurious guest rooms have private baths, working fireplaces and are outstandingly restored with the best of the antebellum era and 21st century comforts. Amenities include central air conditioning and heat, double whirlpool tubs, original Italian marble fireplaces, luxury linens, deluxe and environmentally-friendly toiletries, soft bathrobes, delicious chocolates, bottled water, antiques and period decor.
A stay at Mayhurst is a journey into history, and 2009 was our 150th Anniversary.
John Willis, the owner the Plantation and builder of Mayhurst, was a great nephew of President James Madison and spent much of his youth growing up at the nearby Madison estate, Montpelier, and meeting many of the founding fathers that visited the President Madison and his wife, Dolley. The history of Mayhurst is filled with anecdotal tales of the previous owners, stories of the many distinguished guests that visited (including Generals Lee, Stonewall Jackson and A.P. Hill), the numerous historical moments that occurred here, the graffiti and artifacts from the Civil War and the ghost stories associated with the plantation (we've never seen or heard from any ghosts). Mayhurst is proudly listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is a registered Virginia Historic Landmark both for the history associated with Mayhurst, and for its unique Italianate-Victorian Architecture.
Many of our guests visit the nearby homes of Presidents Jefferson, Monroe and James Madison. Mayhurst is only 4 miles from the recently restored home of President Madison and his wife Dolley, Montpelier.
Other guests immerse themselves in the Civil War history that surrounds Mayhurst by visiting the seven nearby Civil War battlefields of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cedar Mountain, Brandy Station and Mine Run or the Civil War Hospital in Gordonsville. Mayhurst is also a listed property on the Journey Through Hallowed Ground, the historic corridor from Gettysburg to Monticello.
