The beautiful Town of Luray, Virginia is nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 9 miles west of the Thornton Gap interchange on the world famous Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park.  The Town was once well-known as the home to Luray Caverns, the largest and most visited Caverns on the East Coast.   A special edition of National Geographic devoted to the wonders of the caverns in the late 1800’s brought the Caverns to the attention of citizens across the country and made Luray a year-round destination for visitors.  By the early 1900s, the Town boasted several large, well-appointed hotels catering especially to Victorian city dwellers fleeing the heat and vapors at the onset of summer.   Cars and a by-pass highway that made it easier to get to the Caverns without visiting the Town soon took its toll and people forgot about the Town.

Given its location central to so much of what the Shenandoah Valley has to offer, Luray draws visitors looking for outdoor activities and recreation…including hiking, bicycling through the beautiful rural terrain, water sports and river activities on the Shenanodah River and sightseeing.  Shenandoah National Park offers hiking trails, scenic waterfalls and overlooks, as well as many planned activities for visitors year-round.    Many comment about the beauty of the Town, Lake Arrowhead Park  and surrounding areas and the support they receive from local businesses and citizens.

In the Town itself, visitors find lodging, arts, dining, antiquing and a commitment to preserving the heritage of the Town, but adapting older buildings to new uses.  The refurbished train station, which houses the Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Information Center illustrates this commitment.  The same is true of Performing Arts of Luray’s BB&T Center for the Performing Arts.
