Portsmouth, Virginia, with a population of over 100,00 residents, is located in the Hampton Roads (or Tidewater) area of the Commonwealth of Virginia. One of the oldest cities in the area, it was founded as a town by an act of the Virginia General Assembly and named for Norfolk, England.
Portsmouth is home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, an active U.S. Navy facility, where all types of the Navy’s ships are built, remodeled and repaired. It is located in Norfolk County, Virginia. The name, Norfolk Naval Ship Yard has been retained to eliminate confusion with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, which is actually located in Kittery, Maine across the Piscataqua River from Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Portsmouth sits directly across the Elizabeth River from Norfolk and has miles of land fronted on the River.
