The words "Blue Ridge" will begin to conjure up images of the region: majestic mountains, fresh air and tall trees. The Blue Ridge region is all this and more!

There have been many talented people attracted to the beauty of the Highlands, and it is said that country music was born here in the Blue Ridge region, in Bristol. It was here in 1927 that downtown Bristol hosted two weeks of recording sessions that have influenced subsequent bluegrass, gospel and rock and roll artists beyond measure. Visit the Birth of Country Music Alliance, or take a cruise along the Blue Ridge parkway, one of the nations most scenic drives.

And of course, there is Blacksburg, home of Virginia Tech. Stop off here to catch a NCAA Hokies game.

Virginia Highlands Festival - Abingdon, VA

Event City: Abingdon
Event Details:
ABINGDON, VA - 1778 -- Just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachians, is a valley formed by the Holston River. It is there you will find Abingdon, a town rich in history and tradition. Abingdon’s legacy lives on to be recited again and again. Stroll the shaded brick sidewalks in the 20-square-block historic district.
The 2010 Virginia Highlands festival celebrates 62 years of showcasing the talents of the southern highlands of Virginia. Begun in 1948 by Robert Porterfield, the founder of the Barter Theatre, the State Theater of Virginia, the 16 day Festival hosts a Juried Arts & Crafts fair with changing exhibitors, 10,000 square feet of antiques, Natural Resources indoor/outdoor events, lectures and field trips, performances and workshops by actors, musicians, dancers, comics, storytellers, and living history portrayals. Area events include four plays in repertory at Barters Main Stage and Stage-II, traveling exhibits at the William King Regional Art Center, and fine dining at Abingdon’s gourmet restaurants. Over the years, the Virginia Highlands Festival has evolved into one of the top 100 tourist events in North America and one of the top 20 in the Southeast. During the two full weeks and three weekends of the Festival, you will find an array of entertainment, an exquisite antiques market, art and photography competitions, as well as nationally known writers, lecturers, and visual and performing artists. The 2010 Juried Arts and Crafts fair will be held on Remsburg Drive in the heart of Downtown Abingdon, Virginia near shops and restaurants.
Come see why Abingdon was named the “American Dream Town” in 2006 and why the Virginia Highlands Festival is a Top 20 “must see” event (National Geographic Traveler, April 2005).
