The Southern region of Virginia still has the feel of its rich antebellum past where life was linked to the seasonal ebb and flow of agriculture. One can easily spend a week or more driving through the small communities that dot the area, each rich in American heritage and historical importance. Or take the fast lane and experience Virginia's Racing region. With six speedways and raceways, America's most popular spectator sport, NASCAR, takes front and center in Southern Virginia.
There is a lot to be learned in this area about the powerful civil rights movement that has evolved in this area along the Mason-Dixon. Visit some of the first integrated schools in America along rural routes in Southern Virginia.
There is rich Native American heritage in Southern Virginia, and parks like Occoneechee State Park are not only beautiful and abound with outdoor recreations, but the park also has a visitors center highlighting the living history of local Native Americans.
