In 1680, an Act of Assembly at Jamestown authorized the creation of 20, 50 acre port towns in Virginia for 10,000 pounds of tobacco each. Urbanna was one of them. So when you come to see the “City of Anne”, you're visiting one of the oldest towns in America.
Although initially Urbanna’s commercial activities revolved around the tobacco trade, the economy then shifted toward retail sales--and especially later in the century-- toward the fishing industry and tourist trade. By the early 20th century, the town was known for its oyster beds and packing plants as well as being a summer resort community. At the beginning of the 21st century, nearly all the authentic structures remain intact. Urbanna is a historic port town with an old-fashioned flavor.
How did such a small town get such a big reputation? The Urbanna Oyster Festival, of course. Virginia’s official oyster festival hosts 75,000 in the fall. We have a juried art show, a holiday house tour, concerts in the park, street parades, boat parades, fireworks and a monthly farmer’s market, too. Throw your own party in an English garden, on the waterfront, in a pocket park or at a historic site. Get down and boogie.
